Avalanche Advisory
Advisory: Ogden Area Mountains Issued by Bruce Tremper for Friday - April 4, 2014 - 6:57am
bottom line

The avalanche danger is mostly Low but you may find some Moderate: 1) on slopes with lingering wind slabs from yesterday's wind along the upper elevation ridges and 2) if we get significant sun warming today, the danger will rise to Moderate for wet sluffs on steep slopes that are getting wet from sun warming.

current conditions

Yesterday we had typical spring conditions--cold, hot, sunny, cloudy, snowy, windy, calm--you name it. In spring, if you don't like the weather just wait 10 minutes. As you can see from the graph here, we had wild swings in temperature, combined with greenhouse warming from moist, mountain-level clouds, which suddenly changed cold, dry snow into mashed potatoes within minutes. Today we may have more of the same with various mountaintop-level clouds this morning with thicker, higher clouds by noon. The snow surface is sun crusted and damp on the southerly facing slopes but there is still some dry, cold snow left on the upper elevation north facing slopes that still rides well. There's a total of about a foot or two of settled snow since last Sunday.

This is a 2-day graph with the present time on the right of each panel. Temperature on the left and snow water equivalent on the right.

recent activity

The only, significant activity reported from the backcountry yesterday was some fresh wind slabs from wind yesterday morning in the upper elevations of White Pine and American Fork from ski cuts by WPG guides. These were breaking out about a foot deep and one was remotely triggered. In addition, some minor wet sluffs occurred on steep sun exposed slopes from the sudden daytime warming by the sun.

I don't think we will get a lot of sun warming today but avalanche forecasting in our extremely changeable and variable spring weather often takes the form of if-then statements. IF we get enough sun this morning and especially IF we get greenhouse warming from reflected heat from mountaintop-level clouds THEN we could get a sudden spike in wet sluffs on steep, sun-exposed slopes. In the dance between weather and avalanches, the weather always leads.

I would expect that most of yesterday's wind slabs would have settled out by today but, as always, be suspicious of steep slopes with recent wind deposits. They look smooth and rounded and often feel slabby (strong snow on top of weak snow).

weather

We will have variable clouds today with scattered, mountaintop-level clouds this morning with a thicker blanket of higher clouds moving in by mid morning or noon. The temperature should rise from the mid teens this morning to above freezing by afternoon. Wind should stay light from the southwest this morning increasing to moderate by afternoon.

We have a weak, splitting storm affecting us by Saturday, which looks to being a few more inches of snow--perhaps 4 inches. Then, we have another pulse of snow coming from the northwest on Sunday with higher wind from the northwest.
