Comments

Went for an early trail run this morning up Neffs Canyon and also used it as an opportunity to take a look at low and mid elevations where the thinner snowpack is starting to weaken due to strong temperature gradients. This video was taken on a shady, northerly aspect at 6500' with a 30 cm (12") snowpack. This slope was bare ground prior to the Thanksgiving Eve storm, so essentially all the snow that has fallen since the Thanksgiving Eve storm has turned to facets. This may not be indicative of all lower and mid-elevation slopes, and others are finding the mid elevations remaining supportable, so this may be isolated to low elevations, but with an expected heavy & wet storm on the horizon, we'll want to watch any thinner snowpack areas (this includes not only low and mid elevations, but upper elevations as well that avalanched during the last cycle. Mark White is doing his usual excellent work looking at many of those slopes) that may have weakened.
