Forecast for the Logan Area Mountains

In most areas, the avalanche danger is LOW. Sparse pockets of MODERATE danger exist on some outlying upper-elevation north- through southeast-facing slopes, where human-triggered avalanches of wind-drifted snow are possible.

Weather and Snow

The few inches of new snow from Wednesday really improved (it's all relative) riding conditions. While you can feel and see old tracks and buried obstacles, soft snow still exists in shaded, sheltered upper and mid-elevation terrain. The new snow sits atop a faceting snowpack and will quickly facet during the upcoming period of prolonged high pressure. On exposed slopes, you'll find a wide variety of surfaces including breakable wind or melt-freeze crusts and wind buff, where the snow has been stripped away.

This morning at the UAC Card Canyon weather station at 8700 feet, it's 33°F, and there is 42 inches of total snow. The Tony Grove Snotel at 8400 feet reports 32°F and 55 inches of total snow. On Logan Peak at 9700 feet, winds are blowing in the 20s mph from the southwest, gusting into the 30s mph. It's 28°F on Paris Peak at 9500 feet, and the wind is blowing 22 mph from the south-southwest, gusting to 27 mph. Over the past few days, the wind may have created pockets of wind-drifted snow resting on weak, sugary facets in the most exposed terrain.

Skies will be mostly sunny today with 8500' highs near 41°F. Light winds will blow from the southwest. Same same for the rest of the week.

It is possible to trigger small avalanches of wind-drifted snow in exposed upper-elevation outlying terrain.

  • Avoid and stay out from under stiffer pockets of recently drifted snow on steep slopes.
  • Wind slabs may have formed or been cross-loaded in and around terrain features such as mid-slope roll-overs, gullies, under cliff bands, or sub-ridges.
  • Suspect wind slabs are often chalky, rounded, and smooth, and they can sound hollow, like a drum. Shooting cracks and whumpfs or collapsing indicate instability.

Friday, we encountered hard, wind-textured snow in exposed upper-elevation terrain, a sign that pockets of wind-drifted snow may be resting on weaker, faceted snow in lee areas.

Any backcountry travel involves some inherent risk.

  • Always follow safe travel protocols in avalanche terrain by only exposing one person at a time. Make sure everyone in your group has working avalanche rescue equipment (avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel) and knows how to use it.
  • Watch for warming snow on sunny steep slopes in the heat of the day. If the snow becomes saturated, move to a cooler aspect or elevation. Rollerballs and pinwheels are signs of unstable snow.
  • Small loose avalanches of sugary, faceted snow are possible in very steep terrain.

A layer of surface hoar and small near-surface facets is now capped, buried shallowly, and preserved by fresh snow; this will likely become a problematic, persistent weak layer. Drifts of new snow forming on this layer of preexisting weak surface snow could break under the weight of a skier or rider

***Travel with a partner, and cross or ride slopes steeper than 30 degrees one at a time while the rest of your group watches from a safe spot.

Ensure that everyone in the group has avalanche rescue equipment (a transceiver, probe, and shovel) and knows how to use it. Now is a great time to get out in the mountains, explore new terrain, and practice companion rescue with your backcountry partners.
