On this morning’s tour, I set out to ski Kaleidoscope (back side of Little Superior) into Cardiff fork. The snow was bullet hard along the ridge in places, and I mostly climbed along the ridge top in the rocks. Rounding the top of Little Superior my foot dislodged a rock, causing me to step down into the snow. I hadn’t yet put on crampons and my foot gave out on the bullet hard rain crust causing me to slide. My sliding caused the slope to release, sluffing to around 200 feet wide. I was able to self arrest in the avalanche 100 feet below without injury. The avalanche ran for over 1000 feet.
