Accident and Rescue Summary
In the Bountiful mountains, a snowmobiler filming his friend riding up a steep slope was buried in a large slide triggered by his friend. Buried for 20 minutes and losing consciousness, he was extricated, resuscitated and survived with minor injuries. Located with a beacon.
Comments
In the Bountiful Mountains, Trace DeJong, a 27 year old snowmobiler was parked at the base of a steep slope, making a video of his friend high marking above him. His friend triggered a very large avalanche, 8' deep and 200' wide. Dejong tried to start his snowmobile to get out of the way but the avalanche completely buried him after descending 800' vertical. Armed with an avalanche beacon but no shovel, his partner miraculously uncovered DeJong in under 15 minutes, not breathing but alive. A few minutes of rescue breathing brought his color back, and he was evacuated without major injuries.
