cabin roof avalanche. got to the cabin Friday at about noon. noticed a huge roof load, 2 to 5 feet on both north and south aspects. roof is metal. warned all that this was going to slide and that no one could go along either side of the cabin alone and without notifying others they were going to do so... wood shed and outhouse are both along the pathway where the avalanche would slide. started fire and heaters inside cabin. the next day at 1230 while we were in eating lunch the south side slid. the kids were very much startled then amazed then impresses. grandpa - you sure know your stuff. we went outside and the avi had added an additional 4 feet of rubble to the path. we were in the process of making a new path when about an hour later the north side slid. the stauchwall being the crown of the cabin, the slide layer that broke was the warmed boundary of the roof. the forward part of the cabin which has an insulated roof did not slide so we manually broke both north and south with a shovel from the deck. all safe now. within the total slide there were two additional shear planes evident as the slide hit the snow like a stack of crackers with each plane shearing creating at least 3 separate blocks.
