Comments
A large group of Snowboarders dropped in above our party and the first rider triggered a Wind Slab that ran within 65 feet of us. The location was the mini saddle/entrance to Pagan Basin to the west of the summit of Pagan, just up from the Pagan Shoulder. We were tucked into the protected trim line of trees on rider's left. The group obviously knew we were in this location, as we were communicating loudly for a period of time, attempting to get our group together to enter the Surprise Gully, where the slope angle lessens. We had observed widespread cracking and soft wind slab avalanching all morning long. We deemed it unsafe to be in the Wind Loaded Upper reaches of the Pagan Basin. The Snowboarder group gang rode the slope without ever communicating to us that they had initiated and triggered the slide, and or attempting to communicate to us as they rode past us. Size was D1 and not that big due to the fact that the debris fanned out; but the lack of communication and their efforts to jump in and ride the slope before us was obvious.
Upon descent after their group rode through, we were able to trigger multiple D1.5 Hard Wind Slabs, with depths of at least 12 inches. The Strong NW winds were transporting snow and crossloading slopes throughout the day in this region.
