Avalanche Advisory
Advisory: Salt Lake Area Mountains Issued by Brett Kobernik for Tuesday - February 23, 2016 - 6:26am
bottom line

The avalanche danger is generally LOW in the majority of the terrain. Watch for minor sluffing and shallow fresh wind slabs which may release. These won't pose a great threat unless you get caught and pushed over rocks or into trees.

current conditions

The small storm on Monday produced an average of 3 inches of snow with up to 6 inches in the most favored locations of the upper Cottonwoods. West northwest wind was a slightly gusty during the day on Monday. Speeds slowed overnight and are more northerly. Temperatures dropped into low to mid teens. The few inches of new snow of course improved the riding conditions a bit.

recent activity

New snow sluffs and a few shallow wind slabs were reported from Monday. We've heard of no significant activity.

description

Remember, risk is always inherent in mountain travel. Even with a Low Danger, avalanches can still happen in isolated places.

The sluffing from yesterday may not be present this morning but it's good to keep in mind and watch for as you first get into the hills. Same with the minor wind drifts. They will be less sensitive but you might be able to get something to crack out. None of this stuff will pose much threat unless you are in radical, unforgiving terrain and get caught off guard.

weather

We'll see partly cloudy skies this morning with a few instability showers still possible. The system clears out later today. Ridgetop high temperatures should make it into the mid to upper 20s. North wind should be fairly light. The direction may be slightly from the northeast for a period of time today. High pressure moves in for the next few days with warmer temperatures each day through Friday. We are keeping an eye on a couple of systems that may bring some snow to the area, one late Saturday and another one Monday night. Neither look huge but hopefully enough to freshen things up again.
