Snow Characteristics Comments

Dust on crust. There is almost 1 inch of new snow capping the MF crust from Christmas Day. Sadly, these are the best turns I have had in a while. At least the mountains got a fresh coat of white; it's enough to boost morale. Warm and sunny with a trace of new snow - it could be worse. The MF crust and rain crust below it allowed for easy travel both uphill and down. With skis on, I never punched through the crust. I experienced occasional boot pen through the crust on steeper slopes, but didn't punch through in ski boots on lower-angle slopes.

I observed a thin layer of small, faceted grains between the MF crust and the rain crust. This could be a future weak layer, but with any loading, I think our biggest problem will be the facets beneath the rain crust. Before Christmas Day, the snowpack almost went isothermal. A strong temperature gradient has returned to the pack, more typical for late December with a shallow snowpack. I expect the rounding facets to revert back and grow some sharp edges. Still waiting for our next loading event...
