Our extended column was surprisingly how it failed completely on the bottom surface, and the whole column collapsed. We underestimated the weight of the rain and rain crust layers. Forecaster Comment: We haven't seen surface hoar as a buried weak layer. The layer you're referring to is likely the old snow that is now faceted at the base of the snowpack. This is the PWL avalanche problem. Great observation, and thank you so much for submitting. This information helps a ton. I wanted to ensure we didn't confuse surface hoar with faceted snow. - Trent
