Weather Comments
Broken skies with brief periods of sun, but the low cloud deck hung around most of the day while I was out in the Whitney area. The winds were mostly calm on the north end of Double Hill and the temperatures were on the mild side.

Snow Characteristics Comments

A real mixed bag of snow conditions out there today. I was finding pretty wide spread upside down snow with denser snow on top of the weak early season sugary layer. There was a rime crust that is still around from the weekend storm and very hard dense wind slab conditions along the ridgeline.

I had a few large rumbling collapses today as I worked my way up the shoulder of Double Hill. The snowpack is upside down and very weak in structure with the denser snow resting on the weak early sesaon sugary snow.

The collapsing I experienced today was not as widespread as what I found up near the Lofty Lake area yesterday, but I had a few large rumbling collapses that gets your attention.

Comments

Decided to go with the sled to travel into the Whitney area and condions are quite thin and most folks are opting for the wheeled vehicles. Even near the Double Hill area there is only 10-12", with slightly more snow with the help of wind drifting.

Double Hill went through a shallow natural avalanche cycle likely during the Saturday storm. There was not much of a snowpack leading up to this recent storm, but enough wind deposited snow along the ridgeline to overload the weak shallow snow.

The poor snowpack structure is quite evident with strong snow over weak snow. The two ECT tests I performed resulted in one column failing when I was cutting the back and and the other result was an ECTP with just two taps from the wrist.

A couple photos of the upper Whitney Basin where the snowpack looks a little deeper and does quite well with a northwest flow type storm.
