Snow Characteristics Comments
Low-density new snow, 6" most everywhere with 10"+ in sheltered and wind-deposited areas. Despite recent high winds, ridges and open areas weren't totally blown off. New snow was quickly settling with afternoon temps. No daytime winds and high afternoon temperatures mean solar aspects will be pretty well cooked.
Red Flags
Red Flags
Rapid Warming
Red Flags Comments
By mid-afternoon new snow was getting wet and sticky. Skiers should expect sun crust on solar aspects in the morning and wet slide activity by afternoon.
Comments
We found great turns on south faces above treeline and sheltered north/westerlies at and below treeline. Like any good March storm, however, the good skiing might be fleeting. The 6-10" that fell was warming rapidly by early afternoon and settling into wet cement in meadows and on the road. Depending on tonight's temperatures, tomorrow's solar aspects may be crusty or sloppy or both. Isolated point releases observed on high northerly pockets, but otherwise no natural avalanche activity.
