Avalanche Problem #1
Problem #1 Comments
Skiing down the forested west facing slope into days fork opposite the top of Greens basin. Relatively steep slope had a few great turns but soon we were on ice covered by an inch or two of new snow. Pretty much just a dusting on top of an ice sheet that must have developed during the previous warm spell. Didn't notice a crown but it was clear we were skiing in a prior avalanche path that came down somewhat close to the ground in the past few days. As we made our way down mostly traversing because it was log laden ice fest, the one or two inches was sluffing down easily and running quite far, setting up what may be new avalanche conditions on that slope at the next snow. Then we saw the avalanche snow clumped up at the bottom. The guys in my group had skiied the same thing a few weeks ago just fine, but I was glad we weren't there when the new snow was sitting on that ice layer
