Weather
Weather Comments
Cold and blustery this morning, but warmed up sufficiently by mid afternoon that the blowing snow was not particularly frigid. Downcanyon/easterly winds light to moderate all day. Obscured throughout, with no visibility across the highway to the south facing slopes. Snowed the entire day, probably about 6" or so.

Red Flags Comments
Normally wouldn't report something as minor as a bit of wind loading near the Provo Canyon climbing. However ,I was surprised to find repeated 3 to 5 square meter by 15cm thick soft slab pockets rip out as I was moving through moderately steep rock and ice terrain, with shooting cracks and pretty good slab connectivity. These refilled throughout the day due to wind loading. I doubt this will be a problem for much of the Provo climbing due to high traffic in the snow, but some of the Upper Falls routes might harbor enough of a pocket to send a climber off when topping out the steep ice if they're not careful. At higher elevations I have to imagine the wind effects were much more significant.
Comments
Prototypical shooting crack today in the windblown soft slab pockets.
