Comments
The first part of this storm cycle brought some impressive weight and cohesiveness to the snow pack. Last nights cold storm made for superb riding conditions today.
During our travels today we experienced one major whumpf and a large shooting crack which seemed to collapse on the new/old interface on a SW slope around 10,200ft. We did not see any signs of instability within the new snow aside from cracking on wind pillows.
I dug many hasty hand pits between 9,500-10,500ft on S and SW slopes. I was able to find weak sugary snow in some of these pits, especially in the more westerly oriented tree sheltered terrain. In other pits I found fairly consolidated icey snow beneath the new snow.
We dug a pit at 10,200 ft on an unsheltered SW slope, near where we experience the whumpf. The old snow here was consolidated and icey and was finger/pen hardness. Snow depth was about 75cm. We had an ECTX in this pit.
