While skiing rapidly across the toe of a 20-degree, northeast-facing slope, I heard and felt at least a dozen collapses in rapid succession. Snowpack structure near the surface was greatly improved and consolidated compared to the bottomless hoar a few days ago. Although about a foot of dense fluff on top of a sugary crust made for fun conditions on shaded, sheltered slopes above about 7500 feet, there was still a persistent weak layer near the ground.
