Comments
Travels today into the Trout Creek area provided insight into the setup in the south end of the range, and a few key differences could be noted. The observed snowpack is especially weak. Though snow depths total from 40-70cm, mirroring the rest of the range, especially large and well developed depth hoar could be found (see attached photo). Singular crystals nearing 1cm in size were observed in almost all areas traveled. Additionally, the upper elevations have seen both wind and sun, meaning that depths on exposed but polar aspects were in some cases shallower than their lower elevation sheltered counterparts.
New snow from the storm 202411208 with today's snow has produced, in some areas, a slab that may be relatively weak, but is no match for the weakness that lies below it (see attached photo of Andrew holding cohesive storm snow). This phenomenon in areas with wind indensified snow, is more pronounced. As a result, cash register style propagation was found in the attached snowpit.
