Red Flags Comments
As expected anything North facing is loose and faceted from top to bottom with little or no layering worth discerning. However, turns are still just ok, meaning the snow doesn't feel completely lifeless when transitioning from turn to turn. So things are not as bad as they could be and the faceted grains aren't yet pouring out of the sides of the pit walls.. Give it a few more days without snow though and you can stick a fork in it. Snowpit profile is from due West facing Cabin Run/Gobbler's shoulder uptrack. I always find the snow in this specific location to be interesting because it often behaves like a shallow North facing snowpack, despite all of the sun exposure it gets. Today, it was not as rotten as the Northerly aspects. It is not in good shape by any stretch of the imagination, but at least not all bad. There is even some powder still sandwiched between the larger facets at the ground and the inch or so of decomposing snow at the surface.
