We decided to tour in Neff's Canyon today with plans to ski one of the memorial couloirs. There were no major red flags during the initial approach. We identified a thick (~5cm) layer of larger graupel in a hand pit at 7500' on a north facing aspect. Following this, we dug a test pit (HS240) on at 8000' on a northeast facing aspect and performed a ECT and PST. ECTN16 on the graupel layer located at ~215cm (~25cm down from the top of the snowpack). Additional loading after our ECTN resulted no further results. The PST yielded no result. The snowpack structure below the graupel layer was rightside up (1F to P) with no other layers of concern.
In memorial couloir #1, wind loading become more of a factor above 8600'. Here, the wind slabs began to transition from soft (4F+) to harder (~1F) slabs. While the slab was relatively thin (~3cm), we decided descend before reaching the ridge, anticipating the wind loading would be more significant here.
On the ski out, there were several wet loose avalanches on solar aspects (primarily westerly aspects in this zone).
