Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Comments
A LOT of wind and snow transport today as this storm continues. Walking up the ridge going up peak 10420, wind-drifted snow was a very obvious avalanche problem as discussed in the forcast. The cornices along that ridge have been getting thicker, we observed smoothed snow pockets indicative of wind slabs as a result of snow transported by wind, and slabby characteristics of snow underfoot. We did not observe shooting cracks or whumfing where we walked, but in putting in parts of the skin track where wind-transported snow filled in showed development of a wind crust and cracking around our skis that was indicative of propogation. A few photos of cornices along the ridge, strong wind, and snow surface. Skin track was fully filled in and smoothed over wherever there was not wind protection from trees.
