Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
Persistent Weak Layer
Problem #1 Comments
Where the chute turns SE above 9400' I broke through the crust layer and sank down into facets while boot packing. Stopped and dug way down in the snow and through the thick pencil/knife hard crust and found weak facets. Turned around and descended S & SW aspects where the weak layer hadn't been observed.
Comments
Lower in the chute around 7,800' where snow had been deposited by wind we measured 270 cm HS in one spot and 210 cm in several nearby spots.
Avalanche debris at 8,500 feet and a few other places higher. Surface conditions were variable but there was great riding in some areas.
The new snow was graupel.
