Poor Snowpack Structure
Comments
Skied a few laps in the maybird aprons yesterday, snow was excellent until about noon when things started warming. Exited maybird all the way to the road - coverage decent all the way down. I was curious to see how the snow would behave in a shallow, steep rocky section, so I probed around to find an area with shallow snow (HS 70-115 over rockys) and steep slope angle (38 deg). Unsurprisingly, found a very poor structure (bottom half facets, top half slab with a few inches of soft snow on top). I was surprised to see just how weak the snowpack was in this particular spot - had an ECTP11 failing on the interface between the 1F slab and the F facets. Just for fun attached a photo of the 2-3mm facets sitting on the bottom half of the snowpack in this shallow area. For me, this result is a good confirmation of what we've been hearing from forecasters for a while now - the snow seems stable, but if you happen to find a shallow spot in steep terrain, its going to be a bad day.
Photos attached include a view into lisa falls/tanners as well as the snowpack structure in my pit and a nice shot of the facets we're dealing with.
