Comments
Went looking for a thin spot with poor structure and I figured the saddle NE of West Desolation Ridge would probably be perfect. In the words of Drew Hardesty: "Be careful what you wish for."
9546', 294* NW, 25*, HS = 115, Test Depth = 115. F to 4F slab on a variety of facets and decomposing melt freeze crusts that varied from F- to 1F. Not much of a slab in this spot, but with so much weak snow in the midpack it won't take much of a slab to have a big problem. Immediately nearby harder wind drifted snow could be found. I didn't dig in that area because it was steeper. Layers of concern were down 45, the December Drought Layer, and down 105 to 115, depth hoar on the ground.
The facets down 45 were very loose and dry, and propagated with direct eye contact, a mean look, or negative thoughts. The depth hoar required a combination of two out of those three.
CT14 SP, ECTP16, ECTP17, down 45 on 2mm facets.
CT16 SC down 105 (ground) on depth hoar (3-4 mm? didn't have a scope or card.)
PST 25/100 Arr, 50/100 Arr, 75/100 END down 45 (weird nomenclature I know, but I think you get the idea, basically just kept testing to see what would happen.)
PST 15/100 END and slid easily down 75
I checked the box for recent avalanches because old crowns probably 3-5' deep can be found in the area off West Desolation Ridge and above Desolation Lake.
