Weather
Weather Comments
32F at the trailhead ca. 0830 under clear skies with just a bit of wispy cirrus here and there. Calm wind until about 8000ft, at which point winds were around 15mph out of the NW. Definitely felt warm and spring-like today.
Snow Characteristics
Snow Characteristics Comments
Snow surface had a 10-15cm freeze overnight; I imagine this was due to clear skies since temps were so warm. The refreeze made for a mixed bag of conditons on descent, varying between supportive corn-like crust, breakable crust, and mashed potatoes of varying firmness, depending on elevation and sun exposure. The warmest/sunniest slopes have just started to form drainage grooves on the surface.

Red Flags Comments
Saw several avalanches today from the recent warm up (see separate obs for Dry Canyon, Chilly Peak Slabs, and Willard Peak). Saw a plethora of wet slides on the southerly facing terrain of both Black Canyon (pictured below) and Island Peak. Was back at the car by noon, so didn't get to witness today's activity.
