Comments
Weather: Partly cloudy, no wind, unobserved temperature, and profile conducted in full sun.
General: At approximately 1250 I conducted an ECT on the west aspect of the small slide zone near the summit of Beartrap Aspens. Before conducting the test, I observed and tested the firmness of each layer from the new snow to the bottom of the pit 110 cm down. I found 2 weak layers at 20 cm and 90 cm approximately. Layer 1 consisted of hard rain/melt crust while layer 2 was another hard ice crust. The results of the test were ECTP #21. A large and dense slab 2” deep and 90 cm across slid along the column base. It appears the deeper weak layer failed and propagated across the isolated column. See the photos for the intriguing result. In conclusion, this result is consistent with some observations of recent large slides on east faces. However, I will have to dig more pits in order understand the problem further.
