Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
Persistent Weak Layer
Problem #1 Comments
On a skin up from the Loop Road to the ridge above the winter trailhead, I encountered at least 5 instances of significant settling accompanied by whoomphs. It appeared that this settling was occurring about 2 feet deep into the snowpack. In one instance, above the winter trailhead, on a north facing slope about a 35* near the ridge, a 15 foot long crack propagated from either side of a small stump (see pic).
Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #2 Comments
I encountered significant wind drifts on leeward slopes up to 4 feet deep.
Comments
It seems as though the active weak layer is about 2 feet down from the current surface in wind sheltered areas. Areas that are sparsely treed or open appear more prone to have whoomphing and settling. See pic of crack that propagated.
