Comments
Skied Rice Bowl today and dug a quick pit at about 8400 ft with a NNE aspect. We were surprised to find a thin crust about 6 inches down and below that a 1" layer of fine facets that were easily displaced when running a finger through them. The snow above was not cohesive enough to propagate but failed easily along the layer of facets after a few taps (ECTN 4). We were already avoiding possible wind slabs in the more exposed terrain at the top of the bowl and we did not ascend any higher so I'm not sure if the layer exists higher up and on the more direct N aspect. We skied a mellower line on the skiers right side of the bowl and did not encounter any red flags on the way down. I would expect that the new snow has the potential to make this layer more dangerous so it's something to watch out for.
