Comments
Breaking trail could feel inverted layer from the early phase of the most recent storm cycle. New snow depths ranging from 50-75 cm. Signs of Dry Loose avalanche activity in State Line Bowl (E 8800 unknown trigger D1.5, difficult to tell for certain with mediocre visibility) which would have occurred prior to 1100 AM 20230129. Experienced 2 distinct whumfs during the day. First on a south aspect at 8200' while breaking trail. Second during descent on west at 8300'. Dug a pit to investigate the possible cause of the second collapse. ECP11 (W 8300') down 50cm which failed on a layer of weak sugary snow. I also noted that there were a few SH crystals in this layer which leads me to suspect that this is a layer of faceted crystals which formed on the surface during the cold/dry period between Jan 19 and Jan 22 then buried Jan 23.
