Comments
Toured up to Circle Awl with the intent to ski the South slide path if conditions aligned. Very warm day, with roller balls on many sunny aspects, calm winds, and abundant sunshine. We dug at the top of our intended line, and found HS to be 155 cm, althought it was up to 170 cm nearby. Snowpack structure was quite complex, and we found multiple crusts and weaker layers, including the facets at the base of the snowpack. However, these facets did not fail in pit tests, though we did not target them with a deep tap or PST. Surprisingly, a thin layer of mixed forms about 60 cm down failed in both a column tests, and an ECT, and fully propagated. Not sure what the origin of this layer was, but it was enough to dissuade us from skiing our original line, and instead, we stuck to the SE ridge for the descent. The snow was warming rapidly, and we kicked off many roller balls, and one small wet loose, that was ~30' wide, and ran 300' downhill. It did entrain a fair bit of snow.
Otherwise, on the ascent on a NE aspect, no signs of instability were noted. Probing revealed HS to be between 2 and 2.5 m, and many hardness changes were noted, including the facets at the base of the snowpack.
