Problem
Persistent Weak Layer
Problem #1 Comments
The facets at the bottom of the snowpack are still present in the pit we dug, and I still wouldn't trust them, but they do seem to be rounding out and healing. I feel cautiously optimistic for the future with this layer.
Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #2 Comments
We observed a lot of cracking and collapsing with the new wind drifted snow. On one southeast, rocky, and windloaded ridgline, we got loud collapsing accompanied by shooting cracks in both directions. The more shallow the snowpack, the more collapsing we got.
Comments
We dug a pit on a WNW aspect at 7600ft near the Idaho border. Nothing too surprising, except that we could not get any propagation with our ECT. Our results were ECTN 18 and ECTN 25. Both callapses happened on the old facet layer, but did not propogate. This was is sheltered terrain that seemed to be almost unaffected by the wind. Attached is a picture of the facets from the bottom layer.
