Comments
A couple quick comments on today's wild wind and graupel/snow event. Echoing Drew's comments on the excellent riding quality, it was nice to have a cold event.
Wind and New snow were the primary problems today as the MWFL is locked up for now. In my travels I found a very well behaved HST, the interface was spongy and well bonded. However, breaking trail on S/SE was annoying until you set the track primarily because of the abundance of grapuel at the interface.
Throughout the day I was expecting to find some weird mid-slope roll that I could pop off a soft wind slab, and definitely expected one in Jaws under the first rock. But, there wasn't much energy and no reactivity. I did find some wind slab just off the East ridge of Main Days, though it was easily managed and indefinable. Nothing to write home about, just 20cm deep and just one rollover of action and it fizzled out.
There was some dry loose entrainment on the lower steep sheltered NE aspects in Main Days, but again to be expected with graupel and easily managed.
With regards to the consistent wind and variable HST from the strong winds. I found the an average of 20cm in loaded zones and minor reactivity with slight cracking. I would bet on the top of SE Superior this could be a problem tomorrow especially if the graupel interface doesn't settle out. Though I traveled through a variety of steeper aspects and couldn't get things to move. The most wind effect I found was at dusk on the leeward bottom of the Flagstaff Gully - again no cracking, just denser wind effected snow.
Photo below shows the HST and graupel interface - 10,100' SE.
