Comments
For our Avy 1 rescue and snow pit day we headed to White Pine Meadows. Temps at 8 am were cold in low single digits with few clouds. In the am the snow was very cold, loose, and dry. Height of new snow was 27 cm. Once the sun hit the meadows the temperatures warmed significantly into the 20s but felt much warmer. At noon winds picked up to light gusting to moderate with snow transport, and the skies transitioned from mostly cloudy to obscured with S-1 snowfall by 4pm. It almost felt like there was a bit of green housing in the afternoon which helped along with the sun in the am to heat up and consolidate the slab.
Traveling tests showed that the new snow was not bonding well on northerly aspects with F-4F hard new snow sitting on loose F hard facets. Jumping on steep test slopes did not yield any propagation. Formal test pits yielded consistent results on N aspect, 7623', HS=140 cm, 14 degree slope: multiple CTs in high single digits to low teens SC down 30 cm in F hard facets under F to 4F slab. Failure was not at new old interface but in facets a few cm below. Multiple ECTPs in low teens on same layer. Notably, there were several 4F facet layers mid pack that yielded additional CT SC in 20s.
With the slab consolidating by the afternoon due to wind, sunshine, warm temps, and greenhousing, I believe on northerly aspects the danger increased to moderate by afternoon in this zone within the low elevation band. Poor structure and repeated unstable test results point to the possibility for human triggered avalanches in this area 1' deep.
