Weather Comments
A few degrees below freezing at the trailhead. Temps on the mountain seemed chilly in the morning, but by noon or so, felt as though they'd cracked the warm side of 20F. Overcast skies with increasingly mobile clouds throughout the day. Initially calm wind gave way to light northerly wind around 11am.
Snow Characteristics
Snow Characteristics Comments
Calling it an inch of new snow would be generous, but I'm feeling generous. Otherwise, yesterday's warm temps and attendant wetter snow surface meant crust almost everywhere today. The one exception we found was steep, northerly, shaded, and sheltered terrain at mid elevation, but even this was localized. Similar aspects and elevations elsewhere still had crust present.
The surface crust was up to 10cm thick and supportable in many places, but clearly not all locations as we punched through seemingly randomly on the descent, making for challenging skiing. However, it took an edge pretty well on the uphill, to the point that while I'd thought we'd need ski crampons, we never ended up putting them on. Crust seemed most firm at low elevations and southerlies, weakening across east to north aspects.
Comments
Hand pits revealed moderate and sometimes easy shears on the thin crust buried about 8-10" down (see photo for surface snowpack structure). This verified in steep terrain when we fractured blocks of crusty junk underfoot when the upper crust proved breakable (in NE quadrant of compass); see photo.
We noted some surface sluffing, but even in 40+ degree terrain they were not long running.
Finally, we found an old loose wet avalanche at the bottom of the Zero G couloir, SE facing, ca. 6300ft. It ran perhaps 75ft out of the rocks above. I'm betting it's around a week old based on the temps and sun exposure at that time.
