Comments
As part of an avalanche level 1 course, we exited Canyons resort via the Peak 5 exit boundary up to the Park City Ridgeline. NNW facing Easter Bowl was wind stripped and NE facing Big Mac was plump with wind loading. As we traveled west along the ridgeline to Beartrap Glades, we found southerly aspects softening in the warm temperatures and sunshine. We found standing and intact surface hoar on the surface of the ridgeline spreading down onto the northerly aspects of Park City Ridgeline along our tour. We also found dense wind slabs underfoot on N-NE facing aspects from Hanky Panky to Dutch Draw along our tour. Skiing a lap in Beartrap Glades we found loose near surface facets that skied very well on NW aspects, and wind scoured and breakable melt freeze crust on more W facing aspects. Ascending Beartrap West, surface conditions had softened to perfect carvable conditions in the sun and then rapidly refroze on our ascent as the winds and clouds moved in. We entered back onto the N side of PCR at Easy Street, after finding concerning wind slabs in Dutch Draw and High Dutch sitting above a very nasty terrain trap. To be on the safeside, we skied the more scoured and refrozen melt freeze crust on SE facing Easy Street to enter back inbounds.
I expect the avalanche danger to rise from Moderate to Considerable at upper elevation on northerly aspects late Monday should snowfall amounts deliver a foot of new snow and winds load existing northerly surfaces with near surface facets.
