There is no longer any good snow at Summit Park, so the dogs and I decided to dig a pit. I haven't seen anything from these lower elevations so hopefully it's helpful data.
The snow pack is soft on the northerly aspects and a little damp all the way to the ground with the exception of the top 10cm which was dry and powdery. I did an extended column test with no result (ECTX), and it was very difficult to pull out the column. It did break at about 15cm from the base but it wasn't a clean shear. Anything other than NE-NW aspect had a solid crust that made for a good running surface for dogs, but not great turning for myself.
The dogs also did a Deep Sniff Test (DST) and found good stability with a strong likelihood of moose poop at the base, which was much enjoyed by them.
One area that may be of concern are open shrubby areas. It's very easy to punch a pole down to the surface in these locations.
Weather was cold, and we got a nice snow squall that came down quick enough to give the dogs a snow coat in about 5 minutes. That said, new snow accumulation was a trace to an inch. Good evening out for all, but I think the dogs enjoyed the snow more than I did.
Ride on riders!
