Weather Comments
This morning we walked up Mineral Fork, when we started there were clear skies, calm winds, and warm temperatures. As we gained elevation and lost tree cover, wind speeds picked up. The road is, for the most part, holding good coverage that makes for easy travel, the light breeze and cooler temps kept things from getting too sticky or wet.
Comments
On solar aspects, snow coverage is quickly diminishing exposing brush, rocks, and in some places dirt. There is still somewhat of a melt-freeze crust on these aspects that are challenging to travel through in the morning but softens throughout the day. Where we traveled the temperatures softened the snow surface on firm crusts, but we saw no sign of dampening surface snow or any type of wet snow. The only place that had any roller balls was directly off the rock bands following the mineral fork road out of the parking lot, and even those didn't seem recent.
For most of the day, we traveled on protected North and North-East facing slopes where the snow surface is continuing to deteriorate into facets. On the ridge-line, we observed sastrugi that initially looked hard to travel through but has begun to facet making for easier travel conditions both on the way up and the way down. The weakening snow surface continues to thicken and become more consistent and overall well connected. Areas that were initially only faceting in generally protected areas are growing. The fact that even the sastrugi at and near the ridgelines were beginning to weaken during light and moderate winds show the pattern the snow surface is currently going through. While this continues to improve riding conditions, it will turn into our next weak layer when we get another loading event.
