Snow Characteristics Comments
Generally 2-3" of new snow where we rode. This new snow is on top of almost 6 inches of soft faceted snow on shady, sheltered slopes. It's on top of a crust on southerly facing slopes.
Comments
The main thing is that we're monitoring the snow surface. In general it's constantly changing and mostly faceting and weakening.
Photo below is a NW facing slope at 8500 feet. Small facets (0.25-0.5 mm) are capped by 2-3" of snow that fell Monday night.
Photo below is a south facing slope at 9000 ft. There are multiple crust/facet layers under the new snow. We will have to see what happens to the new snow on top. It could facet or it could simply heat up, get wet, then refreeze and become another ice crust.
Photo below is surface hoar (frozen dew) that was capped by Monday night's snow. I think it's an isolated problem, but it's out there. The main thing is that for now, the surface hoar is preserved and protected by the snow on top of it. It can be extremely unstable when a slab of new snow forms on top of it. It can be very low density snow and still qualify as a slab b/c surface hoar is so weak.
I found this surface hoar a week ago on Jan 19tb in this ob.
Lastly, below is a photo of huge settlement cones around the base of trees. They show how much the powder/snow has settled since it last snowed nearly 3 weeks ago in early January.
