Problem #1 Comments
The recent storm snow is settled into a 12-inch thick soft slab. That slab is sitting above a 2-inch thick layer of 2mm facets. Throughout our tour we experienced a dozen or more collapses with cracks shooting 50-feet. The moderate south and southwesterly winds were drifting snow at mid and upper elevations. Where we traveled the wind-drifted snow did not appear to be a separate problem but rather contributing to a thicker and stiffer Persistent slab problem that failed on faceted snow.
