Comments
We ran up to Tony Grove to check out the snow conditions. At 9:30 AM the snow was damp in the campground. As we skinned up through the lower beginner bowl, we found a rime crust about half way up. By the top of the beginner bowl there was a stout rime crust 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. As we rode, our boards would cut through the crust and it rode better than I thought it would, haha. Making turns down the rime crust sounded like a freight train driving through a crystal palace... It warmed up through the day and the crust became less stout. It was warm enough that it sounded like rain from the snow melting out of the trees and the snow became very sticky around trees and lower elevation where it wasn't icy. Regardless of how bad the snow conditions were, it was still a great day in the mountains.
This crust will affect avalanche conditions for a long time unfortunately.
