Snow Characteristics Comments
Just doing cabin sitting off the Guardsman's Pass road and getting out in the neighborhood for some corn in the aspens. This is just a quick report on the snow conditions. Good corn conditions with a solid refreeze overnight and a cool, north wind to keep the lid on much melting during strong sun during the day. We avoided an early start because we needed to wait until about 11:00 am for the sun to soften up the stout frozen crust on the surface. South facing slopes were good 11 am-1pm. After that, we moved onto westerly facing slopes that remained good to about 4 pm. We were mostly between 8,500 and 9,500' in elevation. We saw no other people out today. We did not get onto north facing slopes but I would guess they were quite frozen all day. Temperatures are supposed to be slightly warmer tomorrow with a little less wind, so we're planning to move the start and end time up at least an hour or more. No avalanche hazard today where we were.
