As my old pappy liked to say (I think?): "Dust on Crust is better'n Crust" and that proved itself today. I was curious to see how the new snow would stick to the crusts and the small smidges of steep due north settled powder. Seemed to do pretty well on both; slight sluffs with hard turns in steep terrain, but they didn't run at all. Maybe with more new snow?
there were a few small steep SE slopes that had point releases from rocks (see pic).
As many have noted, cornices are getting big, and as spring really winds up that dangling weight will start pulling them away from ridgelines.
Seems to me that this vast crusting has effectively capped the 'pack and unless we get some big event like we had in mid-Feb we'll only be dealing with new snow instabilities until there are big melt-out avalanches maybe failing on the buried weak layers in May?
