On Jan. 21 we traversed from near Chicken Hill to Hells Kitchen canyon, traversing over White Pine Knob, into White Pine Canyon, up to the east end of Burner Bowl and down the adjacent low-angled NE slope, across Steam Mill canyon, onto the east flank of Steam Mill Peak #1, and down into Hells Kitchen. The day prior, Jan. 20, we had skied Chicken Hill and found fast and fun recrystallized powder only on the most sheltered and north/northeast-facing slopes. Higher slopes had wind loading, some sun crusts, and anything soft (which was mostly wind-deposited) sloughed easily off a shallowly buried crust. On Jan. 21, we found more of the same near the Check Your Pants run off White Pine Knob. The steep south-facing slope north of White Pine Creek was sketchy and bare, with a bit of side-slipping and exposed rocks everywhere. The snowpack on the northeast side of Steam Mill peak was thinner than what we saw near Bunchgrass, and we gently hit lots of down trees and rocks - it would NOT be fun to get caught in a slide here! The extra 4-5" that fell by the morning of Jan. 23 was pretty heavy below about 7500'.
