Comments
Height of new snow was 30-40cm depending on aspect and elevation. From my travels before the storm noted surface hoar and found it preserved in the sheltered areas today, though in open areas it was much less pronounced. Two small collapses while setting uptracks, but nothing thunderous.
In the mid elevations of Cardiff Fork there was not much of a storm slab or wind. A tick up in wind in the sheltered areas, likely when the shift to NW happened. I would think higher elevations saw wind throughout the day.
Of note, and main reason for this ob, is the instability noted about 45cm down from the surface. I noticed this very subtle and brittle crust layer NE on Wolverine at 10,500' on Thursday, and seems like Staples and Meisenheimer also saw this on Ant Knolls. Today it was evident around 9K on NE as well, and you didn't need a slab to get it to break out. Even the slightest increase in slope angle, I got the layer to react, and if I was skinning above on a test slope from where I had already cut the snow I easily got soft slab blocks to break out. The brittle and thin crust seems to be from the rime event and it's super weak with facets underneath. See photo below.
This layer has my attention since when the slab becomes more cohesive I envision this to be the first fracture in the pack before stepping down into the NFL layer.
