Comments
One to four inches of new snow at the surface was getting blown around by the unusual easterly wind. West thru north aspects in upper Cardiff fork had new wind drifts up to 6 inches deep that would crack with ski pressure but their shallow nature didn't pose much of a threat. The snow below this newest low density dusting is Rough. Recent winds created a moonscape-like surface crust that varies from breakable to supportable. Pics, upper Cardiff thin coverage and sculpting, shallow wind drift cracking and sliding on firm bed surface.
I dug a couple pits above 10K' on north and northwest aspects, if for nothing else than to document this shallow, poor structure so late into the season. Less than a meter of snow on the ground in most places? As like everywhere in the range weak facets exist both mid-pack and near the ground. The most concerning thing in each is a strong layer or crust capping extremely weak facets anywhere from one to two feet below the surface. Along with creating really bad skiing, these crusts can hold more of a load before failing in the junk below leading to larger avalanches. That is, if it ever decides to snow.
