Over the past four days I've had several collapses while out touring in the mid and upper elevations in BCC, either on the skin track after a few laps or thunderous ones while setting a new trail. Naturally our hazard spiked with the snow/graupel and wind, and this only exacerbated the issue that we have a poor structure waiting for more load to crash the whole thing down.
Travel today was up Silverfork into Days and back down Silver. In the morning I saw a loaded flank of one of the ravines in the mid locales of the drainage. It looked prime for a stomping to get some beta and it broke easily - shooting down the ravine flank about 50 ft. See video below - 8800' WNW
We continued to get in your face collapses throughout the day, again on our skin tracks we had previously used and while traveling in fresh snow.
Our ski tour consisted of traveling through benched terrain and low angles on the shadier aspects and being really diligent on overhead hazard. The snowpack isn't tricky now, it's in your face sketchy and it takes a different mindset to cruise around when not in the heavily trafficked solars. I'm thinking more along the lines of my trips to Canada early season - when it's sketchy but we work through low angles and benched terrain. The Colorado mindset of skiing the thicker slabs where PWL exist seems suspect to me, especially with all of these collapses prior to this week's storm, and on areas that are seeing traffic. It's a clue that at some point suspect slopes that are being skied may just release.
Pit and Photos are below. The ones with red dashes are from huge collapses, one from a skinner used maybe by 6 travelers already. Most photos are self explanatory, but the one of just terrain around boulders and ravines is a reminder that these small slides near terrain traps and creeks are full of weak snow in the colder hollows. Additionally the boulders aren't back filled with snow - it's lean out there, so a small slide here while trying to skin around them could get ugly.
