Problem #1 Comments
With such cold temperatures and shallow snow, the snowpack is likely continuing to weaken and facet. There's no "healing" happening. The upper half of the snowpack (the slab) seems to have settled and become a bit more cohesive from how it felt under my skis. Sadly, I could still see evidence of my snowpits from when I was last here on Dec 17 with Nikki. The facets have mostly adjusted to the slab of snow on top of them but I still don't trust them.
Because so many people have skied through this area, they have triggered all the collapses that can happen. I had to get off the skin track and work to find a spot that would collapse on me but it was possible. Recent winds have blown down canyon, from north to south, and transported some snow. The most likely place to trigger a slide (and where I got a collapse) is where winds have drifted a little bit of snow adding a little extra weight and cohesion to the slab on top of the PWL.
Comments
Small settlement cones around the stalks and trees show how the new snow has settled.
Recent winds have blown down Days Fork, south to north (left to right in the photo).
Slopes facing southeast and receiving some sunshine, have a mix of crusts and facets near the surface.
