Comments
Dug a pit at 8,280 ft elevation on a 15-20 degree slope, northeast facing, ~35 in deep: ECTP 10, failure at ~13-14 in at the boundary between a faceted layer and crust (photo). The cohesive slab pulled off contained a crust at ~7-8 in, with the new snow on top. The entire profile contained several layers of faceted snow separated by crust or wind slabs (?). Although I did not have any collapsing on the way up, another skier who took the same route yesterday (23 Dec) told me he felt collapsing along his route. Ridges traveled were wind scoured and cornices were seen on the higher, steeper ridge (photo).
