Based on the instrumentation at 5am I went to Cardiff Bowl because it looked like this is where it snowed the most. While not always accurate, today they were right on. A good portion of upper LCC received 30 to 40cm Wednesday and Wed. night. Those are 20cm tape marks on my poles. The last 10cm or more was 5% fluff. What a difference in 24hours from crust skiing to pow turns.
The air was cold and the winds were calm most of the morning. No new avalanches or obvious signs of instability were seen today but don't' be tricked into thinking there aren't dragons lurking out there.
The Solstice rime crust was observed in most area traveled today but it seems that the snow above and below it is currently bonded well and so far not a problem. When looking closely at it I wondered if it actually contributed to stability today because this layer is strong and there is not much of a slab above it. Yet.
These kinds of layers tend to hold more of a load and allow the slab to grow before they fail monumentally. Keep your eye on this one until it proves this theory wrong.
Lastly, sometimes you just have to give thanks for the unexpected gift of powder skiing with a morning rainbow sun dog.
