Comments
Started the morning in Grizzly Gulch, but only found about 4-6" of very low density snow on top of very stout crusts. Ended up retreating to West Bowl to see if we could find something with more dust and less crust. Snow depth in west bowl seemed closer to the 7-11" that was advertised in the avalanche forecast. Despite reports of graupel in the fist part of the storm, we were not finding graupel in the hasty hand pits I dug on the south facing Emma's. The new snow suprisingly seemed bonded pretty well to the crust below, and we only experienced minor sluffing in the steepest rolls.
Winds seemed to be mostly non-existent overnight in the areas traveled. We did not observe any evidence of wind slabs or wind loading. While traversing along the Silver Fork headwall we did not experience any cracking or collapsing. This is the first tour i've been on in the last week that I didn't experience at least one collapse or crack. Most of West Bowl, including the NE facing corner pocket had been skied without signs of cracking or sliding. However, prior to the storm the headwall had a yawning stress crack near the ridge and I would not reccomend dipping into that part of the bowl.
I didn't spend too much time looking around, but we did not come accross any evidence of recent avalanches in Grizzly or West Bowl. We left before it warmed up really at all, but the sun was out and I would imagine the S and W facing could take on some heat.
For those wondering about coverage on the S facing, the Emmas are still pretty thin and I drilled a good number of rocks on the way down.
