Got out today in Santaquin Canyon to climb Backoff. General conditions seemed like the snow from the last 24-48 hours was the only snow in most of the canyon. The road (closed and still washed out) had 4-6" of fresh with no base under it. Backcountry travel was difficult with light, unconsolidated snow covering the ground and whatever deadfall and forest detritus was there. The drainage to Backoff had water ice just under the snow and required crampons not far up from the road.
Weather was snowy and blowy at times and calm at others. We observed wind depositing quickly in micro terrain features where the snow would collect at the bottom of steeper features. We observed a number of cracks in these terrain features as we disturbed the snow in the area on our approach. Later in the afternoon there was some graupel, though not enough to accumulate in a uniform layer on flat surfaces. However, in spots where it could collect below the ice and steeper features it would accumulate.
